I love my hair when it’s sitting just above my shoulders – I feel like that’s when it suits me best – and yet you might have noticed, I’ve been letting my hair grow.
It wasn’t a conscious decision at first. My last haircut was in October last year, and with so much going on – work, family, holiday house, and other commitments – making the time to go to the hairdresser just wasn’t a priority.
But as it started growing past my shoulders, the husbear pleaded with me to let it grow. What is it with men and long hair?!
I’ve only had long hair a couple of times as an adult.
It was quite long when Mr 28 was born, but it got in the way so within a few months I’d done what so many new mums do, and got the chop.
The kidults can only remember me having long hair once before, when we went on our caravan holiday around Australia in 2001 – yep, more than 20 years ago!
So I thought it was time to let it grow again.
I persuaded myself that having longer hair would allow me to have a sophisticated “up” do (most likely) for Mr 28’s wedding at the end of the year. (Mind you, I haven’t bought my dress yet so the final decision will all hinge on that!)
At the same time there was that little voice telling me that “older women shouldn’t have long hair” … meh, it’s only til the end of the year and then we’ll see.
Surprisingly, I’ve found longer hair easier to care for and style. Less hairdresser appointments for one; and it’s quick and easy to tie up or put in a messy bun, if I don’t feel like wearing it down.
I’ve had some fun too with the GHD straightener the kids gave me for Christmas (or was it my birthday?!) – though I still haven’t mastered the pretty curls that Miss 25 styled for me! (Isn’t it funny how those with curly hair often hate it and fret over how to care for it; while those with straight hair – like me! – wish they had curls and bounce?!)
The Secret to Loving My Longer Locks
I still wasn’t convinced, especially when I had some new professional head shots done recently – I thought my hair looked better in the ones I had done, last year.
But now I’ve realised the secret to loving my longer locks – it’s keeping them well maintained.
On Saturday I popped into the hairdresser for just a trim and was shocked at the difference it made!
My hair looks healthier.
Shinier.
Bouncier.
More youthful.
It even looks less grey.
It looks amazing, and suddenly I’m thinking: it actually DOES suit me.
Maybe letting my hair grow wasn’t such a bad decision after all.
Of course the real test will be whether my long hair lasts into 2023!
What’s your preference: Long hair? Shoulder length? Or short?

Your trip around Australia could not have been 20 years ago?!?! ?
I think you are right about regular maintenance being the key.

Yes, hard to believe but it’s actually 21 years ago!!!
