My biggest fans here on the blog are my own two kids – Mr 27 and Miss 24.
If I am ever late with a post (or heaven forbid, miss one altogether, which does occasionally happen because you know, life), I get scolded in a barrage of text messages.
You can also be assured that they keep me on the straight and narrow, if I make a mistake or fudge a fact, they are on to me like a ton of bricks!
Seriously though, I’m actually quite chuffed that they not only read my ramblings but seem to enjoy it. I learned a long time ago that just because somebody knows me doesn’t mean that they actually follow my blog. In fact I’m pretty sure that most of my friends and family rarely stop by (their loss hey?!).
Some people have also made it clear that they don’t like appearing in photos or being mentioned on my blog, and I do my best to respect their wishes – but my kids are definitely not amongst their number and are delighted when they find they have ‘guest starred’ in a post!
I still try to protect their anonymity (though if you really wanted to, I’m sure you could work out their names with a quick stalk of my social media profiles) by referring to them by their ages. But it seems a bit weird now that they are well and truly grown up – and technically, Miss 24 is now Mrs 24!
So I’ve been wondering if it’s time to change their ‘names’ here on the blog and thought I would throw the question over to you, my readers.
It might help if I give you a little bit more background about these two principal characters in my life and by extension, my blog …
Mr 27 – Our firstborn graduated with a Bachelor of Commerce at the end of 2018 and is now working as a para planner for a financial planning firm in the City; he is also studying part-time for a Masters in Financial Planning. He was a regular at the gym but like many I think Covid has thrown a bit of a spanner in the works.
He started dating his lovely girlfriend almost 12 months ago now, and it has been wonderful to see how this has expanded his horizons. Thanks to her influence he has been learning how to cook (at long last!) and has taken up Brazilian Zuke dancing. He still has some of his movie memorabilia collectibles but given that his GF doesn’t like horror movies, some of the scarier pieces have been sold and moved on to new homes! Her family seems to have taken a real shine to him and *gulp* we will soon be meeting the parents for the first time. It must be serious!!!!
Miss (or should that be Mrs?!) 24 – Our daughter also works in the City and in the past few years has risen through the ranks as a legal secretary, and is now supervising a team of her own.
She and her man recently tied the knot, much to the delight of their three kitties Annabelle, Delilah and Egg 😉 . When the kids had to postpone their wedding (twice!) last year due to Covid, they cheered themselves up by buying their first home. At the time we were worried as we thought house prices would drop as a result of the pandemic, but what did we know. Prices have actually skyrocketed so they are very grateful they got their start on the property ladder when they did. And no more annoying rental inspections!
Just like her mama, our girl enjoys op shopping, nanna naps, and she is particularly partial to a Z-Raff (coffee from Zaraffa’s).
This proud mama’s heart is thrilled that these two are not just siblings, but they are also friends. They were already in the habit of meeting up for lunch once a week – and now the husbear is a city worker too, they get together almost every day leaving me feeling just a little bit left out!
But back to the dilemma at hand – should I continue to call them Mr 27 and Miss 24? In blogging circles it’s common to refer to children by acronyms such as DS (dear son or darling son) and DD (darling daughter or dear daughter) but I’m not convinced.
Given that I am “Janetti Spaghetti” perhaps a pasta theme might be suitable … but it’s not really self-explanatory, the way Mr 27 and Miss 24 are.
And so I am asking for your thoughts on the matter. Should I continue to call them Mr 27 and Miss 24 or is it time to find them new names?!
