Out of the blue, we’ve booked a week’s holiday in Darwin!
When we did our big trip around Australia, we never completed the lap – it took us six months to get half way (Brisbane to Perth) and then we had to turn around and head home again.
The husbear grew up in north Queensland so we’ve been there several times, but the Top End was still on our bucket list.
It’s been quite a while since this little black duck set foot on a plane! We went to Bali at the beginning of 2017 which was amazing, and then I went to CopyCon in Sydney, April of the same year.
Truth is, we’d planned to fly to Melbourne to see the Harry Potter play in May 2020 for our 30th wedding anniversary but … the world ground to a halt with the outbreak of Covid.
So we’ve been sitting on a flight credit ever since, with absolutely no desire to go anywhere except our cute li’l beach shack on Coochiemudlo Island.
Then I got an email saying that we’d lose the credit if we didn’t book a flight before the end of the year … and just like that, we decided to use that credit to go somewhere we’d never been before … Darwin.
We’ve booked a week’s accommodation on the Esplanade, and are now working out where to go and what to do while we’re in town.
So far my research (surfing the web, and asking a couple of people who’ve been there) has uncovered the following possibilities:
- a visit to the Mindil sunset markets (Thursday and Sunday evenings)
- a sunset cruise on the harbour
- a tour to see the jumping crocodiles
- swimming in the waterholes at Berry Springs Nature Park or Litchfield National Park
- Crocosaurus Cove.
- fish feeding at Aquascene.
- Darwin Waterfront precinct including the wave lagoon, and the protected beach.
The good news is most of these are just a stone’s throw from our hotel – so, not sure if it’s worth hiring a car or just doing tours.
To be honest I wouldn’t mind if we spent the whole time in the pool (or beside it with a cocktail!) … could really do with a break!
It’d be nice to go to Kakadu but as it’s a bit of a distance, don’t know if we’ll manage that this time around.
So hit me up with your experiences and ideas, as we plan our trip to Darwin!
