It occurred to me that seeing as you all love my Sentence A Day posts, you might also enjoy learning more about the minutiae of what a typical week day looks like for me.
I’m a wife, empty-nester, business owner, work from home, cat-owning kinda gal ….
6.30am (ish) – I must confess I am very spoiled, as my day gets underway when my beloved husbear brings me a coffee in bed (as he wakes before I do).
However, what he conveniently has forgotten is that for about the first 20 years of our marriage *I* was the one that got up early and made coffee (though I can’t remember if I brought it to him in bed – I think I might have). You know how it is ladies, it took me longer to get ready for work, put makeup on etc so I always got up earlier … and then once the kids came along it was pretty much the only time I could snatch for a shower or quiet breakfast (so not a morning person, LOL).
We chat over our coffees before he starts getting ready for work, and I assist by ironing him a shirt.
7.00 – 7.30am – The husbear heads off to work, the exact time depends on which train he is catching to the city (however, on Wednesdays and Thursdays he works from home. It’s nice to have him around – we actually go outside for our breaks and play with the cats – but I definitely don’t get anywhere near as much work done!)
I wish I could say that then I go for a walk or some other form of exercise but I’m well and truly out of the habit these days. It’s something I really do need to pick up again as it’s good for my health and wellbeing …
I like to read a book while eating my cereal (current favourite: Uncle Toby’s Plus Iron) and then it’s off for a shower … except for Wednesday mornings when I’m up at 5 and leave at 6 for my BNI breakfast meeting (did I mention I’m not a morning person?! That’s dedication I tell ya!).
Most days I wear shorts (summer) or long pants (winter) but try to wear something a bit more corporate up top so I look presentable for any Zoom meetings – or if no meetings, a tshirt is okay! Generally I make the bed and a couple of other chores, such as putting on a load of washing, packing or unpacking the dishwasher, and litter tray duty (or poo patrol as we call it).
9am – I’m at my desk by 9am and so is Fleur, she is usually super-demanding and wants heaps of pats and love first thing which can be a bit annoying when I’m trying to get stuck into some work! She likes to rub her (wet) nose on my hand and arms (cat snot, ewwww) and give me head boops. It’s very cute and I do enjoy a bit of a cuddle with her; after a while she gets bored and curls up on her cushion beside me.
Once my computer is booted up, the first thing I do is check my calendar for any meetings, so I can set an alarm to go off 10 minutes beforehand. It’s a rare day when I don’t have a Zoom meeting, and I’ve learned the hard way that I can become so engrossed in work that I forget … whoops!!! Not a good look for my clients and customers.
So what are all these Zoom meetings about? There’s a weekly check in with each of my team members (3 at the moment), and I provide online training in SEO most Tuesdays at 10am. I also provide a free SEO consult to businesses thinking about working with us, to see if it’s a good fit; then when a client does sign up, we have a quick alignment session to make sure everybody’s on the same page.
Once I’ve checked my calendar, I check my bank accounts and Quickbooks to see if there’s any payments to be done or invoices to be issued – I long for the day when I have an amazing bookkeeper to take on these chores!
9.30am – Open my emails. I’m trying to get out of the habit of treating my inbox as my “to do” list, by only checking it first thing, at lunch time, and at the end of the day.
11am – Usually by this time I’m hanging out for a cup of tea so I head downstairs, Fleur comes too (she is my faithful little shadow!). While the jug is boiling I’ll hang out the washing or similar.
I take my cuppa and a snack up to my desk and keep working (and Fleur usually begs a tidbit or two).
Anywhere between 12.30 and 2pm – Once the worms start biting I take a break for lunch. My favourite lunch is leftovers from the night before – quick and easy to heat up in the microwave, and I swear that everything tastes better the next day!
2pm – Head down, bum up LOL … returning phone calls and emails, assigning tasks to my team, checking their work, making sure we are progressing all of our current client work. I might stop for a cuppa or snack in the late afternoon but only if I really need one.
6pm-6.30pm – The husbear is “meant” to get home from work around this time, so this is when I finish up for the day. If he gets home later, I work later … running my own business, there is always so much to be done!
6.30pm-ish – Once the husbear is home we have a cuppa and catch up on our days, before making a start on dinner (depending on who is more motivated / hungry!).
7.30pm-8pm – Dinner is done and dusted so we usually play with the cats and flake in front of the TV.
I might work on my latest puzzle or read my book, because often the husbear falls asleep in front of the telly! Other nights we’ll watch something on Netflix while riding our exercise bikes.
Anywhere between 9.30-11pm – Bedtime … and then we do it all over again the next day!

I’ve thought about a standing desk but to walk as well … I don’t know if I’m that coordinated! Would certainly be a good idea though as I spend way too much time on my backside 😉
